It is generally agreed by scholars that the four key members were Lewis, Tolkien, Williams and Barfield. Williams began regularly attending meetings when he was evacuated to Oxford from the London office of the Oxford University Press at the outbreak of the Second World War. But there were other evacuees that also made an enormous impact on Lewis. Days before the outbreak of war, one and a half million city children were dispersed around the country. m. on 30 August 1939. There were no illusions about Hitler’s intentions.

Tolkien, recently come to Oxford from Leeds University, who soon became a lifelong friend. They would criticise one another’s poetry, drift into theology and philosophy, and pun or talk English department politics. Tolkien soon shared what had been a private world, early tales and poems of his invented mythology of Middle-earth. He also most likely shared a beautiful verse translation of Beowulf, the Early English poem that inspired much of Tolkien’s literary philosophy. S. Lewis was of great significance to both men.
