In the 50 years that experience handed considering the fact that Alfred Latka's dying in 1949 his place because the father of mathematical demography has been safe. along with his first demographic papers in 1907 and 1911 (the latter co authored with F. R. Sharpe) he laid the rules for solid inhabitants conception, and over the subsequent a long time either principally accomplished it and located handy mathematical approximations that gave it useful applica tions. due to the fact his time, the sphere has moved in numerous instructions he didn't foresee, yet broadly speaking it really is nonetheless his. regardless of Latka's stature, besides the fact that, the reader nonetheless must hunt throughout the outdated journals to find his imperative works. As but no exten sive collections of his papers are in print, and for his half he by no means as sembled his contributions right into a unmarried quantity in English. He did so in French, within the half Theorie Analytique des institutions Biologiques (1934, 1939). Drawing on his components of actual Biology (1925) and such a lot of his mathematical papers, Latka provided French readers insights into his organic suggestion and a concise and mathematically available precis of what he known as fresh contributions in demographic analy sis. we'd be exact in additionally calling it Latka's contributions in demographic analysis.

The mechanical theory of heat, as well as experimental physics, is familiar with these fluctuations, these small departures from the mean state, which reveal themselves to observation under certain very special conditions. We will see shortly what importance these fluctuations, ordinarily on an ultra-microscopic scale, can have for the philosophy of living matter and the problem of free will. We have seen that a process of mixing is not capable of furnishing us an objective criterion for the direction of the passage of time and that it is essentially for this reason that, in principle, the second law of thermodynamics also cannot.

And yet it is in the discussion of these collective effects that we should most probably seek the expression of the law of organic evolution, just as the law of physicochemical evolution is most easily expressed in terms of the collective effects of the molecules taking part in the transformations to which the system is susceptible. CHAPTER2 The term "evolution" is so solidly established both in everyday language and in scientific jargon that we accept it habitually, without sensing the need to analyze its exact meaning.

That is a much debated question,* a question not without considerable import in the philosophy of science. From the earliest days in the history of the thermodynamic concept of irreversibility we find allusions to this problem. " Since that first suggestion by Kelvin, a number of authors have more or less definitively taken up the question of whether biological organisms are above the reach of the second law. In this discussion it is necessary to guard against an error. It is true that the action of biological organisms often has the character of introducing order where disorder reigned, while inorganic actions generally tend to destroy order and to replace it by chaos, as should happen in conformity with the law of dissipation.
