In his cognitive-mediational theory he outlined two major types of appraisal: (1) primary appraisal, directed at the establishment of the significance or meaning of the event to the organism, and (2) secondary appraisal, directed at the assessment of the ability of the organism to cope with the consequences of the event.

Frijda (1986,1989,1993b) cautioned his fellow researchers not to mix up the cognitive structures of emotions with the cognitive antecedents, because cognitive antecedents of emotions are ways of seeing and interpreting events, whereas the emotional experience belongs to the emotional response. Emotion generation, according to Frijda, is not a linear process that simply takes cognitions as input and outputs emotional experience and response but is basically a biphasic and recursive process (Frijda, 1989).
